Back in 2020, when Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenant’ faced the risk of being delayed due to COVID-19, the filmmaker was asked to make a big sacrifice if he wanted his cinematic dream to turn into a reality. The banner behind ‘Tenant – Warner Bros. convinced Nolan to forgo a certain amount of his fee.
Nolan, who had spent most of his professional years with Warner wasn’t happy with the way they handled a couple of his projects. And thus, he took a breath to analyze his next move. He left Warner and shook hands with Universal. Reports suggest that Christopher Nolan has decided to work on his next with Universal, despite Warner offering him a hefty amount.
According to Variety, the newly appointed film execs Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy tried to woo Nolan back in 2022. To sweeten the pot, they sent him a seven-figure cheque, which was a gesture to return the fees he had previously waived. However, Nolan didn’t get attracted to the extra bucks. The filmmaker who is known for his modest lifestyle opted to stick with Universal, as he is clear on what he wants.
Reflecting on Nolan’s decision, Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, shared with Variety, “What matters to Nolan is are you going to release this right? Are you going to have the correct marketing strategy? Are you going to get the IMAX screens? Are you going to leave me alone to make the movie I want to make?”
For the unversed, Nolan made ‘Oppenheimer’ with Universal and despite being R-rated, the film made a great deal of business at the box office. It raked in an astonishing $976 million approx worldwide. “The least likely subject to make money in the history of the entertainment business,” Galloway said. “Only a handful of directors are well known to the general public, and he is currently at the top of that list,” box office analyst Jeff Bock said while talking to Variety.
Next, in the pipeline, Christopher has some interesting projects. Rumours say he is interested in diving into the espionage genre.
